Summary WP6.5: Monitoring and remediation plan, Norwegian site

Etor Querendez et al.

In the present work, a monitoring and corrective measures plan has been set up for the "Alpha" structure of the Trøndelag Platform area, which is regarded as the best storage candidate for the Norwegian site due to its favourable reservoir properties. Because of the relative lack of available data for this site, only a generic monitoring plan has been proposed, based on CO2 injection simulations for two distinct scenarios.

A risk-based monitoring planning tool, developed by TNO, has been used to prescribe the most relevant monitoring techniques in view of the identified potential risks. Cap rock leakage and spill point leading to migration of CO2 outside of the main reservoir are the more "probable" risks associated to the site, but only extreme injection conditions (in terms of injection rate and duration) would be able to generated the risks conditions given the good reservoir quality of the "Alpha" Structure.

The corrective measures plan was developed in accordance with the guidelines given in the EU Guidance Document 2. Our approach is derived from a review of two corrective measures plans that were designed for industrial scale storage projects for which storage license applications have been submitted to the Competent Authorities.
